🥇 Leaders 🥇
What I am about to show you is real.
This ‘thing’ is having similar reactions from the tech industry as ChatGPT had when it launched back in 2022.
For the first time in more than a year, I am honestly bamboozled at some of its capabilities.
But I am not alone on this, as people like Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, or Ethan Mollick, famous Wharton Professor, are not easily impressed, but Devin did so.
Let me take you on a journey started by 10 people, aged 20 to 27 and with several math Olympic gold medals, who have created the first-ever, fully-autonomous AI software engineer that has even proven capable of executing end-to-end freelance jobs.
However, although we will cover its features, much has been written already about them, and less about the real repercussions it will have for humans and the future of labor.
And as the Moravec paradox proves once again, my dear knowledge worker, you might be next.
Let’s meet Devin
Well, there’s really a lot to talk about Devin so, where do we start? I guess that a definition is best.
The Future of Software Engineering
Devin is the first fully autonomous AI software engineer. It is an AI product that can emulate the job of a software engineer and perform tasks such as:
Planning and execution of complex engineering tasks
Integration of common developer tools within a sandboxed compute environment for comprehensive task execution.
Active collaboration with users, including real-time progress updates and feedback incorporation.
In particular, here are just a handful of tasks that Devin has proven capable of executing:
Learning New Technologies: It can quickly adapt to unfamiliar technologies. For instance, after reading a blog post, it runs ControlNet on Modal to generate images containing concealed messages for Sara.
Building and Deploying Applications: Devin can also create interactive websites from scratch. In an example provided on the website that simulates the Game of Life, Devin incrementally adds features upon request and deploys the application to Netlify.
Autonomously Finding and Fixing Bugs: Devin assists in maintaining and debugging an open-source competitive programming repository.
Training and Fine-Tuning AI Models: Given only a link to a research repository on GitHub, Devin can set up the fine-tuning process for a large language model.
Yes, you read that right, an AI training an AI.
Addressing Bugs and Feature Requests in Open Source Repositories: It’s also capable of handling issues in open source projects by doing all the necessary setup and context gathering needed to address bugs and feature requests, provided with just a link to a GitHub issue.
And I was saving the best for last…
Performing Real Jobs on Upwork: Devin completed a freelance job in Upwork, including writing and debugging code for a computer vision model, sampling the data, and compiling a report at the end.
To my knowledge, that…
